slanted sky

cool summer grass between my toes,
we stare at the glinting stars in a sea of sky.
I lean my head back until I lose my balance
and collapse among the dandelions.
they look unfamiliar at night
but inviting, still.

your heart is slanted and your eyes are tired
but the fire behind them doesn't die
until morning
when the sun comes up
and the starlight fades
and it's time to go back home.

things look different standing up
than they do lying down.
